From The Great Machine
About page refresh: Check your cache settings to see if it says "check every time a document is loaded." In Mozilla and IE this is easy to find in the config menu. In Firefox this can be hard to find - type about:config into the URL bar and the key name is browser.cache.check_doc_frequency, change it to 1. --RC
- Usually, I don't have to worry about the cache... everytime I refresh a page it loads it from the original source. I emptied out the cache, because I believe that, after a while, having a motherlode in your cache can muck up things. --Joe Beaudoin Jr. 06:08, 4 Apr 2005 (CDT)

[edit] Wiki Extension...
Hey, is there a chance you could perhaps make the Firefox wiki extension you plugged on your BSG page available to us chickens here at FirstOnes? the link to download it is quite deceased.
- Zaarg. Or, I mean, yaarg! :-) I have some work to do on it, but I'll release it in a few days. (Right now, I'm beta-ing it.) Works just fine, as far as I can determine. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 13:00, 4 Apr 2005 (CDT)
- Check out the User:Joe Beaudoin Jr. page for the new link to download the extension. Version 0.2 has some new features; TGM is also listed in the "Other Wikis" category. --Joe Beaudoin Jr. 12:39, 7 Apr 2005 (CDT)
Passing on info - we now have a crusade based spoiler tag for any crusade entries you make. The tag is cspoiler or cspoiler2 (take a look at TGM:Formatting Page. Just a freindly update from the admin team! :) :) --Random Chaos
[edit] Contact info
It looks like Sanfam may not check his talk page here that often (I was unable to find any email notification preferences in the prefs setup.) You may need to drop him an email at his preferred email addy. --Steelviper 16:17, 19 May 2007 (CDT)
- Sorry, I do have a habit of forgetting to do such things :P Sanfam at Gmail dot com is the way to reach me. Sanfam 12:34, 21 May 2007 (CDT)
- No worries. I send you an e-mail. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 19:55, 21 May 2007 (CDT)
[edit] Featured Episode?
What about implementing a featured episode here, akin to the OSAD at BW? Something to theoretically focus our efforts (in theory) or at least break down the problem into digestible chunks. --Steelviper 18:59, 7 July 2007 (CDT)
- That would work, definitely. We could start from "The Gathering" and go on from there. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 12:32, 8 July 2007 (CDT)
- And so it begins... --Steelviper 14:12, 10 July 2007 (CDT)
- Perfect idea. I will be on a series of business trips next week, but my sweetie just bought the DVD of season 1 and I should be able to move my recording of "Gathering" to my computer for perusal. I should take advantage of the good work of Catrope, Veepz, Serenity and BkynBruzer are doing in mopping and get here more often. --Spencerian 09:40, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

[edit] Rules and Policies
Now that we have Infinite Cosmic Powers, where is best to begin? I've noted that this page appears to be the only policy page, and there are no guidelines.
Items I'd like to stamp down immediately include (and there's a lot)
- Fanwank policy (this will evolve as we deal with things like "battlecrab", which SV found was fanon)
- Standards and guidelines (do we adopt BSG Wiki present tense, among other guidelines there, just for consistency? If yes, we can practically copy and paste, then begin revising.)
- Anonymous login (That ship sailed, sinks on Wikipedia, and sunk on BSG Wiki. I recommend accounts be required now.)
- Episode pages (create as summaries per Lurker's Guide and BSG Wiki immediately, starting with "The Gathering" per earlier ideas here. We need a template if one doesn't exist.)
I've already banned one anonymous user for large-scale blanking. No reason I can't be civil. :)
There's more, but my fingers are officially tired. --Spencerian 10:05, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
- The anonymous login thing has to be implemented on the server level. (Odd, it actually was before, but I think the upgrade may have hosed that.) In any event, I think we should definitely bring in guidelines from BSWiki, but more as proposals, rather than as something set in stone. At least that'll get us started in the right direction. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 14:56, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
- Personally, I really like the idea of adopting one tense for all of the articles, but I would suggest we use past tense since B5 is presented more like future history rather than an ongoing tale. --Dstrek 16:41, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
- Looks like TGM policies I found recommend present tense, too, so we're good there. I'll look into getting some core guidelines ready and search for any others. --Spencerian 17:05, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

[edit] Spoilers: Lost Tales
Hi Joe, I've been away for a little while, and I've been trying to catch up using the Recent Changes Link. I'd read half-a-dozen pages about Lost Tales before I'd realised I was spoiling myself. Is there any way you could indicate that this info is from the DVD, which most people haven't seen yet? Mine's on its way, but surely this will be a spoiler for at least 12 months? Thanks for that. -- Waylander 03:27, 7 August 2007 (CDT)
- I'm sure we can slap a spoiler tag on it... -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 05:32, 7 August 2007 (CDT)
[edit] Episode Citation Stuff
I'm not sure whether this page is the correct place for this, but Joe seems to be one of the active experts around here, and I'm sure others can chime in with sensible opinions. I've been thinking about the ways in which we cite episodes within articles here in The Great Machine.
Firstly, I think it would be easier to read and write articles if the entire episode name wasn't included. For example (S3E20 And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place) could simply be something referenced like: (S3E20). I know we could create 110 redirects of all the episode numbers to point to the Episode names (which is a good but time-consuming idea anyway), however, if we could somehow get the episode name to still appear when we moved the mouse over this link, that would be great too. Can we (that is somebody other than me) write some kind of template so we could just type: "#cite(S3E20)" or "<cite>S3E20</cite>" and it would do all of that automatically? I don't know Templates well enough to know what's possible.
Secondly, there're lots of assertions in existing articles that may possibly have been copied from dodgy sources. Wikipedia has the extremely useful Template:Fact which inserts a little "citation needed" flag into the exact place in the sentence, not just the "ref" bar across the page. Is it possible to implement this functionality here on the Great Machine? Yours in anticipation. -- Waylander 01:50, 29 September 2007 (CDT)
- No problem posting this here, Waylander. ;-)
- In response to your questions, your suggestion is very much doable. I can create a template that does this easily; the only thing we'd need to really start doing is creating the redirects from the episode number (i.e. S3E20) to the episode name (i.e. "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place").
- But what do we do about movies? How will we number those?
- I guess we can use the convention used on The Lurker's Guide:
- That works for me. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 02:33, 1 October 2007 (CDT)
- As for your second question, I can get the {{fact}} template and implement it. That'll be the easy part. ;-) -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 12:19, 29 September 2007 (CDT)
- Ok, the {{fact}} template is up. ;-) Although if the information is so bad that it doesn't deserve to be added, we should just go ahead and rid ourselves of it. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 12:33, 29 September 2007 (CDT)
- Regarding that template, here's an example of it in action. Let me know if it works for you. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 21:05, 29 September 2007 (CDT)
- Holy COW! I had no idea you'd launch into such a huge operation based on a little suggestion. Magnificent work Joe, incredibly impressive. The functionality is even better than I had imagined. I'm almost hesitant to make any more suggestions, but here goes. Feel free to ignore all:
- What do we need to do to set up an new redirect - first create the S1E02 redirect, but then what?
- Can we get the link to be formatted like the rest of the hyperlinks (underlined)? No worries if not.
- The quotes and formatting on the Main Page seem to have been slightly broken. I'm sure this was something to do with changing the Style.
- Hmmm... Maybe it was. Odd. The skin needs to be updated anyway, since it still uses some of the old styles from older versions of the Mediawiki software. Also, when the skin gets upgraded, I'll also add the styles for the citation so that it looks like the other links. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 02:33, 1 October 2007 (CDT)
- Hold off on dramatically updating the style just yet. the next phase of wiki/forum integration is going to drastically alter the style mechanisms. Until we're certain how the module alters its style engine, I'd suggest that you settle exclusively for fixes where possible. And I almost forgot, fantastic work on that clever citation system! Sanfam 12:38, 1 October 2007 (CDT)
- Wilco and thanks! I wasn't planning on making any major skin changes immediately anyway. Might be a few weeks before I'm able to get around to it. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 13:21, 1 October 2007 (CDT)

Update: Just to let everyone know, I'm talking to an associate of mine to see if I can get this to working as a MediaWiki extension, which is why I haven't gone ahead an created the other templates yet. (I hope to make the templates unnecessary, so we can just use a simple code to make it work, like <cite name="Midnight on the Firing Line">S1E01</cite>.) This makes it useful for inline citations that don't pertain to episodes as well. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 01:32, 2 October 2007 (CDT)
[edit] Inline episode references now work
Ok, my associate is done working on the extension. (That was quick!) Anyway, here's how the code works.
- Simply encase an the episode ID in between the <redircite></redircite>.
- Example: <redircite>S1E01</redircite> will produce: S1E01.
- Of course, redirects will have to be created. Waylander has already started with that, so that's great.
If you have any questions, field them here. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 13:28, 3 October 2007 (CDT)
[edit] I hate Bots
Joe, it appears no-one visits here much anymore. I'm not an admin, so I can't delete the three robots who automatically vandalise three pages, all I can do is undo. If you get this, could you please kill them for me? Thanks ---- Waylander 22:50, 25 October 2008 (CDT)
