All of the major races except the Narn have telepaths among their populations.

[edit] Human Telepaths

Notable Human telepaths in the series include Lyta Alexander, Talia Winters, Alfred Bester, Jason Ironheart, Harriman Gray, Alisa Beldon and Byron.

In the Earth Alliance, telepaths are reared and regulated by the Psi Corps. Though they have headquarters and training facilities both at EarthDome and at Syria Planum on Mars, the Psi Corps have offices on almost every Earth Alliance colony and outpost. As they say in their advertisements, "The Corps is everywhere for your convenience."

Human telepaths are generally discovered at a very early age and raised by the Psi Corps. Those who are discovered at a later age (usually latent telepaths) are required to make a choice between one of three fates:

  • Enter the Psi Corps
  • Be sent to a relocation facility (akin to imprisonment)
  • Be forced to take sleepers until death.

Alternatives have been shown to exist, such as a telepath underground railroad and the possibility of emigrating outside of human space.

Psi Corps telepaths are ranked by perceived ability, with a P1 as a barely functional telepath; while a P12 (the highest registered rating) is reserved for Psi Cops - the leaders, managers, policers and bloodhounds of the Psi Corps.

Of the major races, only Earth does not employ telepaths in military or espionage roles.

[edit] Minbari Telepaths

Minbari telepaths are considered to be greatly gifted. The use of this gift is extended as a free service to those in need of it. In return, their needs are willingly provided for by all Minbari as called upon. (Delenn to Ivanova and Alisa Beldon, S1E17, Legacies)

Those with Psi abilities are given to the Religious Caste at the time of their gift's emergence.

[edit] Centauri Telepaths

Centauri telepaths are members of the Telepaths Guild. The Guild is a commercial organization who hire out telepaths to provide their services.

All male telepaths are able to read the minds of others but only a percentage of female telepaths have this ability.

Spoiler warning: Plot, character development, or ending details follow.

The remaining female telepaths are gifted with the ability of prophecy. While these seers cannot read the people's minds, per se, a few can project their visions to others' minds (Lady Ladira to Jeffrey Sinclair, S1E16, Signs and Portents). Other seers' talents are apparently enhanced or focused via touch (Lady Morella to Londo, S3E09, Point of No Return).

Of female telepaths able to read minds from birth, a select few are taken, reared and trained together (usually in clusters of four), and entered into service with the Royal Court. These female telepaths divide their time and talents between the Court and wherever the Emperor happens to be at the moment. Usually, two will accompany him while the other two remain at court. This way, two of the telepaths keep the Emperor up to date on events at Court, while the other two keep the Court informed of the Emperor's activities. (Sheridan and Ivanova, S2E09, The Coming of Shadows)

Many Centauri, telepath or no, have the ability of foresight and are able to foresee the manner of their deaths in dreams.

[edit] Narns

Narn telepaths were exterminated during the last Shadow war.

The Narn, being the only major race without telepaths, believe this puts them at a disadvantage among other races.

This belief, plus a healthy libido and an interest in human females, led G'Kar to approach Lyta Alexander (The Gathering; and S5E20, Wheel of Fire) for the dubious privilege of either mating with her or of obtaining telepath DNA from her for Narn experiments to restore telepaths to the Narn species.

It also gave cause for Na'Toth to approach Alisa Beldon (S1E15, Legacies) about obtaining some of her telepath DNA.

[edit] Backstory

Over centuries, telepaths were created and manipulated by the Vorlons as weapons for use against the Shadows. It is rather intriguing to note that the Shadows assumed influence over the Psi Corps at an early stage in their development, and swung them to their side. (S3E22, Z'Ha'Dum: "They [the Vorlons] created telepaths on a hundred worlds to use as cannon fodder for the next war," Justin explains. "But fortunately, our friends got there first and with the help of the Psi Corps, made sure that they came out on our side.")
