John J. Sheridan was a military and political leader central to galactic events.
As a young man, I joined Earthforce because I wanted to be part of something bigger than I was; something that I could believe in. And that belief carried me through the Mars Riots, the Minbari War and the battles that have brought us here today. Everything I did, I did out of love of Earth and love of duty. But what happens when those two are no longer the same thing? Now, the time I spent on Babylon 5, I learned about choices and consequences and responsibility. I learned that we all have choices, even when we don't recognize them and that those choices have consequences not just for ourselves, but for others. And we must assume responsibility for those consequences. -- (S4E21 Rising Star)

[edit] History
[edit] Pre-2259
- 2245 - Lt. Commander and First Officer to Captain Sterns on the EAS Lexington at the beginning of the Earth-Minbari War.
- 2247 - Standing in for Captain Sterns, who was killed in a vicious Minbari Fleet attack against the Sol planetary system, Lt. Commander Sheridan destroyed the Minbari flagship Black Star by mining the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and thereby became the "Only one human captain [who] has survived battle with a Minbari fleet." As a result of this victory, the Minbari later accorded him the grudging appellation Starkiller -- spoken more in disgust than in respect.
- 2248?-2259 - Captain of EAS Agamemnon.
- 2251 - Helped Jeffrey Sinclair put down the Martian Food Riots (S3E03 A Day in the Strife, S4E11 Lines of Communication, S4E21 Rising Star, S4E22 The Deconstruction of Falling Stars)

[edit] Character Trivia
- During his youth, he travelled the globe with his father, an international diplomat. At 21 he went to Tibet and met the Dalai Lama. They shared a simple meal together: rice, raisins, boiled carrots, and green tea. When it was over, the Dalai Lama asked him, "Do you understand?" Sheridan said that he did not. The Dalai Lama smiled and said that was good (Points of Departure).
- JMS has said that John Sheridan is the descendant of the famous Civil War Union General Philip John Sheridan [1]
- Though Sheridan is left-handed in the show, he bats right-handed when he visits the station's baseball field. (Knives)
- While some sources claim Sheridan's middle name was originally given as "David" in And Now For a Word, JMS has confirmed several times that Sheridan's middle initial is "J." (see talk page). Sheridan's full middle name has never been given on screen; perhaps it is actually Jay! He is officially described as "John J. Sheridan" in four separate episodes:
- by himself as part of his system password (Ceremonies of Light and Dark),
- in ISN Nightside's brief biography in 2262 (The Deconstruction of Falling Stars),
- by President Luchenko (Rising Star),
- and twice by G'Kar in his inauguration (No Compromises).
