Captain is a term with many different meanings. Captain is used as a term in civilian organizations (police, fire, airline, etc.) and as a rank in the military (navy, army, air force, marines).

In nautical tradition, the title of Captain is typically used to refer to the Commanding Officer of a ship. As a military rank, a captain is the highest grade of line officer in the navy.

In the Earth Alliance military, this rank used by both the Fleet and Ground Forces. A Fleet Captain is superior in rank to a GF Captain. (Naval Captain = Ground Force Colonel, both are O6; Ground Force Captain = Naval Lieutenant, both are O3).
