Babylon 5 (station)
From The Great Machine
Babylon 5 is the fifth and final station constructed by the Earth Alliance's Babylon Project. The station is located in neutral territoriy in the Epsilon Eridani system and became operational in the year 2257.
It was designed as a base for species to trade and negotiate, and if necessary to reduce tensions between their respective governments in the hopes of preventing another war. Originally under the command of Commander Jeffrey Sinclair and later passing over to Captain John Sheridan and others, Babylon 5 would grow to become something larger than anyone could have predicted.
The station was completely demolished on the orders of EarthGov in the year 2281, well after the ISA had moved its headquarters to Minbar. It had been decided that the station had served its purpose, that it was too expensive to maintain and that it posed a hazard to navigation.

[edit] History
The Babylon Project was conceived out of the Earth-Minbari War, a conflict that quickly rose out of control when one of the Minbari leaders, Dukhat, was killed in a misunderstanding; the Minbari swore to avenge his death, and Earth was almost destroyed; but in the human race's final hour, the Minbari suddenly broadcast their surrender. It was later discovered that they surrendered because the souls of dead Minbari were being born into human bodies, and to continue killing humans would be to violate the law set down by one of their greatest religious figures, Valen: Minbari do not kill Minbari.
Earth Alliance President Luis Santiago wanted to make sure that conflicts between humans and aliens would never happen based on simple misunderstandings, and so the Babylon Project was born. It's goal was "to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully."
The first three Babylon stations were sabotaged and subsequently exploded before they even came online. The fourth, the biggest and most expensive station, mysteriously disappeared from the area. Several unconfirmed witnesses watched the station "vanish into thin air."
After the destruction and disappearance of the first four stations, EarthGov was reluctant to construct a fifth station, even with large contributions from the Minbari Federation and the Centauri Republic. The Earth Alliance finally agreed to build it, on the firm understanding that it would be the last.
The station came online in 2256, under the command of Jeffrey Sinclair, a veteran of the Earth-Minbari War.
[edit] Layout
A self-sufficient city floating in space, the Station employs 6500 personnel and 1500 guild dockworkers. Babylon 5 stretches 5 miles in length and weighs in excess of 2.5 million metric tonnes.
The Station layout is divided into colour-coded sectors, with each section serving a different purpose:
